Rehberg Helps Pass Legislation Providing Regulatory Relief for Montana's Family Farms

WASHINGTON D.C. - Montana’s Congressman, Denny Rehberg, helped pass legislation in the House of Representatives to limit onerous EPA fuel storage regulations for small agriculture producers that are too costly and unnecessary. The Rehberg-sponsored Farmers Undertake Environmental Land Stewardship (FUELS) Act passed the House this week. The bill would modify the over-burdensome regulations in the Oil Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) program.

WASHINGTON, DC—Within the Clean Air Act’s Accidental Release section, there is a broad and confusing provision known as the “General Duty Clause.” This clause states that facilities using or possessing chemicals—such as oil and gas producers, refineries, chemical manufacturers and others—have a “general duty” to identify hazards which may result from a chemical release and to take “necessary steps” to prevent such releases.

Introduced by Colorado Members Scott Tipton, Doug Lamborn, Mike Coffman, and Cory Gardner, the bill would reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfires, address factors that contribute to insect infestation, and restore forest health by prioritizing and implementing hazardous fuels reduction projects on federal land.
