House Passes Legislation to Overturn Biden Administration’s Natural Gas Tax

Washington, February 26, 2025 | Eli Mansour (202 510-8612)

Today, Congressional Western Caucus Chairman Doug LaMalfa (CA-01) and Representative August Pfluger (TX-11) released the following statements following passage of H.J. Res. 35 to overturn the Biden Administration’s Waste Emissions Charge final rule, which was established in the Inflation Reduction Act. The legislation was introduced by Rep. Pfluger and passed by a bipartisan vote of 220-206-1.

“The United States is the world leader in natural gas production, and we produce this affordable and reliable energy source cleaner than anywhere else in the world,” said Chairman LaMalfa. “Unfortunately, due to the Biden Administration’s obsession with radical climate policies, American natural gas was under attack by draconian rulemaking. Today’s resolution will overturn one of those radical policies: a natural gas tax that penalized extraction and would directly result in higher prices for American families. I applaud Representative Pfluger for his leadership in overturning this rule to keep natural gas affordable and reliable.”

“In November, the American people overwhelmingly voted for lower energy prices, and today, House Republicans took another step towards fulfilling that mandate,” said Representative Pfluger. “In the latest effort to reverse Biden's disastrous energy policies, the House passed my bill to nullify the EPA’s rule implementing the ill-conceived natural gas tax. This tax raises costs on production, discourages investment, and increases energy prices across America. I am looking forward to working toward a full repeal of the underlying statute and continuing to implement President Trump’s pro-energy agenda.”

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finalized the Waste Emissions Charge rule in November 2024.
