Today, Congressional Western Caucus Chairman Doug LaMalfa (CA-01) released the following statement supporting the secretarial memorandums from U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins and U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum outlining reforms to the National Wildland Fire System to improve wildfire response efforts across the United States.

“Today’s orders by Secretary Rollins and Secretary Burgum to eliminate redundancies and duplicative functions of our wildfire response system will help to shore up wildfire safety in America and across the West,” said Chairman LaMalfa. “Far too often, the current wildfire response regime has failed Americans, leaving firefighting resources delayed or sidelined, and leading to devastating loss of life and property. By consolidating Federal fire prevention and response efforts and building stronger partnerships with state, local and tribal officials, our firefighters will be better equipped to fight fires before they rage out of control, and save lives.”

With today’s announcement, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Department of the Interior will work to modernize and consolidate Federal wildland fire capabilities.
